Why do we say apostles creed

A creed is a statement of faith used by individual Christians and churches to express what is believed. In many mainline churches it is spoken in worship on a regular basis. The author of the creed is unknown. It is sometimes called the Baptism creed and is often used in worship services where there is no communion. The Nicene Creed was developed in response to controversies within the church and is a bit longer. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Martin Luther wrote the Catechism as a way to teach preachers and heads of households about the Bible and the basic teachings of the church.

He wrote a simple explanation of each article section of the creed, which is as follows:. But as Ursinus expounds upon the Apostles' Creed, he also endeavors to demonstrate how Reformed Christianity differs from Roman Catholicism on such essential doctrines as justification by faith alone, the nature of the work of Christ, as well as the sacraments.

So, while the creed may set forth what is essentially and uniquely Christian, Protestants contend that the Roman Church sadly defaults on these same doctrines at a number of critical points. Because there is great need to summarize the teaching of Scripture and to identify with the faithful who have gone before, many Protestant churches still recite the Apostles' Creed.

This is why the Reformed churches consider the Apostles' Creed to be the best summary of the basic doctrines of the Christian faith, and this is why an exposition of the creed lies at the heart of the Heidelberg Catechism. In the United Methodist worship service, the response of the people is an important part of worship. So, it is appropriate that affirming what we as a whole believe follows the sermon as a response to the proclamation of the word.

An order for United Methodist Worship Services can be found on page of the hymnal. The pages contain the basic order of worship that we follow. Of course, there are seasonal variations, but we get it pretty close to following the hymnal each week.

Most people in this part of the country have been to worship services that have the sermon at the very end. Elders, what we call our ordained pastors with these responsibilities, are ordained and charged with Order, Word, Service, and Sacrament in the congregation to which they are appointed.

So, although most elders like myself follow the order of worship from the hymnal and the traditions established in the local congregation they serve, there are times and contexts when they change the order or do something different to meet the need of that context. But, most UMC congregations throughout the world come pretty close to the order in the hymnal.

So, when you travel, it is nearly the same service each time.
