No cause was given, but a reschedule always appeared imminent. A year and a half later, a well, here we are. A new tour with new dates was set for last year, but a global pandemic kicked the can down the road again. There are seventy-some songs on the box set from years ago. You have old soul songs you dig playing. Each of you has a body of work outside the duo. Is it difficult to figure out what to play? At least a certain percentage of them.
What it comes down to with the shows with John, there are obligatory songs we gotta do. Like a dozen. Two dozen. But you can only play so many songs. So we try to be flexible within those songs and the arrangements, to bring new life into them and make them stay interesting for everybody including ourselves. Q: You viewed yourselves as an album band. But deep down I think people really love singles. The rest could be equally good, but they become deep cuts.
And who knows how many amazing, talented people are out there with the potential to do who knows what, who may never get a chance to express themselves. We enjoy working with other people, it brings a breath of fresh air to the creative process, from the very beginning. We never saw ourselves as a classic 'duo. So even though we're two guys, kind of, on our album covers, there was always a cast of very important people working in the background.
That said, the anniversary does bring their minds back to the very beginning of their partnership. One of their first shows took place at an art gallery in downtown Philadelphia. They had no formal band at that point and took the stage with just a mandolin, piano, and acoustic guitar. That is really still true today.
We appeal to a wide variety of people. People come to our gigs now who are young enough to be our grandchildren. There is nothing I can do about. If I have any regrets about the MTV era, I would have been a little more discerning about the directors and the concepts we decided to use for our videos.
Those hits, however, mean that the group can headline arenas and amphitheaters year after year and rarely face empty seats. The only problem is that they have too many hits to cram into one show. Romantic Sad Sentimental. Sexy Trippy All Moods. Drinking Hanging Out In Love.
